I’ve always used songwriting as a vehicle to express things I’ve found difficult to articulate. I wrote Song 26 at a time when I was experiencing a lot of anxiety.

The song reflects those moments when I was caught up in a mess of destructive thoughts and how even a simple conversation felt like a challenge. At that time, I found it easier to lock myself in my room and write rather than sit in the pub with my mates.

lyrics

Smoke the cigarettes down to the bitter ends,
Moderate the way you dress to impress your best friends’ friends
Feel your blood run cold as you take a joke too far
You sit and wonder who you are

Pretend to them you like the skin you're in
Sit in the corner and smile and have another gin and slim
See them making eyes like who the hell did we invite
Your best friend smiles and it's alright

And you second guess your worthiness, how you'll never be enough
You fill your head with the words they said, instead of call them on their bluff,
You construct a life of loneliness where everything goes wrong,
Instead of fight the fight, you write a song!

And it goes on and on and on and on and on
on and on and on and on and on

I'm down on my luck and work is thin again,
I guess I could just give up but what the hell would I do then?
Just live to survive or I could work the nine to five,
I've got the dream but not the drive.

And I feel the palpitations like a dagger in my breast!
When a simple conversation starts to feel like a goddamn test
When I look to my foundations they don't seem to feel as strong
Instead of putting it right you write a song.

And it goes on and on and on and on and on
on and on and on and on and on
on and on and on and on
on and on and on and on
